Effective: 2026-05-18 · Version 1.0
Important. Local Motion is a research and preparation tool. It does not provide legal advice. Output is generated by language models. You are solely responsible for verifying any citation, fact, or argument before using it in a legal proceeding.
1. Acceptance of these terms
By installing, accessing, or using Local Motion (the "Software"), you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Software.
2. License
Local Motion is licensed, not sold. During the public beta, individual users are granted a personal, non-transferable, non-exclusive license to install and use the Software on their own devices for the purpose of legal research and hearing preparation. Reverse engineering for security audit is permitted; redistribution is not.
A commercial license for firm-wide deployment will be offered separately at general availability.
3. No legal advice; no attorney-client relationship
Nothing the Software displays constitutes legal advice. The Software does not create an attorney-client relationship between you and the developer, between you and any model provider, or among any combination of those parties. You should consult licensed counsel for advice on any specific legal matter.
The Software is a tool for organizing and surfacing information you have provided. It applies natural-language processing to text generated from your audio plus library data you control. It is not a legal research database, a substitute for Westlaw or Lexis, or a substitute for the judgment of a qualified attorney.
4. Verification is your responsibility
Before relying on any citation, holding, statutory reference, factual assertion, or suggested phrasing surfaced by the Software, you must independently verify it against an authoritative source. The Software's constrained-citation architecture prevents the model from inventing IDs that aren't in your library, but it does not guarantee that:
- The library entries you provided are themselves correct.
- The case-to-fact pattern match the model proposes is the strongest available authority.
- The language transcribed from audio is verbatim what was said.
- Statutes or rules have not been amended since you populated the library.
Use of the Software in any judicial proceeding remains entirely at your discretion and risk.
5. Third-party services
The Software invokes third-party services that you configure: speech-to-text (e.g., OpenAI, Groq), large language models (e.g., Anthropic, OpenAI), and the document ingest pipeline. Your relationship with those providers is governed by their respective terms and privacy policies. You are responsible for ensuring your use of those services complies with their terms, your jurisdiction's rules of professional conduct, and any court-specific guidance on the use of artificial intelligence.
6. Ethics, disclosure, and professional responsibility
Many jurisdictions and courts have issued guidance, standing orders, or rules concerning the use of AI assistance in legal proceedings. You are responsible for being aware of and complying with such guidance as it applies to your matter and your jurisdiction. We strongly encourage proactive, candid disclosure to the court of AI-assisted research or preparation when prompted, and in all cases when required.
The Software is designed as a fast-access version of notes and prep materials you yourself have curated. We make no representation that any particular use of the Software is permitted or prohibited under your bar's rules of professional conduct, local court rules, or applicable case law.
For the position we take on specific objections — Mata v. Avianca, third-party-vendor privilege, work product under Hickman v. Taylor, ABA Formal Opinion 512, Model Rules 1.1 / 3.3 / 5.3 / 5.5, stale law, FRCP 11 exposure — see the objections page. That page is what we hand to a partner reviewing this tool for institutional adoption.
7. Disclaimer of warranties
THE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE," WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION ANY WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, NON-INFRINGEMENT, ACCURACY, RELIABILITY, OR COURSE OF DEALING. NO ADVICE OR INFORMATION OBTAINED FROM OR THROUGH THE SOFTWARE CREATES ANY WARRANTY NOT EXPRESSLY STATED IN THESE TERMS.
8. Limitation of liability
TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, IN NO EVENT SHALL THE DEVELOPER BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES — INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION ADVERSE LEGAL OUTCOMES, ATTORNEY-CLIENT RELATIONSHIP COMPLICATIONS, PROFESSIONAL DISCIPLINE, LOSS OF DATA, OR LOSS OF REVENUE — ARISING OUT OF OR IN CONNECTION WITH YOUR USE OF THE SOFTWARE, WHETHER BASED ON WARRANTY, CONTRACT, TORT (INCLUDING NEGLIGENCE), OR ANY OTHER LEGAL THEORY.
In jurisdictions that do not allow the exclusion or limitation of certain damages, the above limitations apply only to the extent permitted by applicable law.
9. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless the developer, its contributors, and its agents from and against any third-party claim, demand, suit, action, or proceeding arising out of your use of the Software, including any reliance on the Software's output in a judicial or quasi-judicial proceeding.
10. Open-source components
Local Motion is built on top of permissively licensed open-source software, including Tauri, Rust, React, cpal, Whisper, and Tailwind. Component licenses are reproduced in the application's "About" panel. Nothing in these terms supersedes any open-source license that applies to those components.
11. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time. The "Effective" date at the top of this page reflects the most recent change. Material changes will be announced to early-access users by email.
12. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of New Jersey, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-laws principles. Any dispute arising out of these terms or your use of the Software shall be brought exclusively in the state or federal courts located in New Jersey, and you consent to personal jurisdiction there.
13. Severability and entire agreement
If any provision of these terms is held unenforceable, the remaining provisions remain in full force and effect. These terms, together with the Privacy Policy, constitute the entire agreement between you and the developer concerning the Software.
